For the third consecutive year, ArcelorMittal receives the Steelie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Sustainability. Announced at the World Steel Association's Annual Dinner in Monterrey, Mexico, the mark marks the industry's leadership in sustainability amid the growing pressure steel companies are facing to chart their approach to reducing carbon emissions.
The award was presented in recognition of the publication by the company of the first report on climate action in the metals sector in May 2019. The report outlines three paths the company believes could lead to deep decarbonization of steel production - the various low-emission technologies the company is experiencing and the government policies needed to make low-emission steel a reality. It also confirms ArcelorMittal's commitment to the Paris Agreement and outlines the company's ambition to significantly reduce emissions across the group, including achieving carbon neutrality in Europe by 2050.
Brian Aranha, Executive Vice President of ArcelorMittal commented:
“I am delighted to receive this award for the third year in a row, especially as I was told that the jury voted unanimously for ArcelorMittal. We are immensely proud of the visionary resource that our people have brought together to help stakeholders understand what the transition to a low carbon steel industry means in practice. While the report does not answer all the questions, it will spark some very important negotiations with stakeholders in the metals industry and beyond. These conversations will be essential to develop the collaborative approach that the world needs if we are to unleash the full potential of the steel industry's decarbonization efforts. ”
