Cherepovets Iron and Steel Works reduced specific energy consumption per ton of products

Press Releases

The Cherepovets Iron and Steel Works, one of the largest steel plants in the world (part of the Severstal Russian Steel division), has reduced the consumption of almost all energy resources for tonnes of products in 9 months of 2019 compared to last year. The economic effect amounted to 156 million rubles.

According to Vadim Germanov, General Director of the Severstal Russian Steel division, the decrease in performance was achieved by reducing the consumption of electricity, fuel and oxygen. In particular, the consumption of electricity decreased by 17.6 million kWh, fuel - by 12.5 thousand toe (ton of standard fuel), oxygen - 19.7 million m3. The specific indicator of energy consumption of PJSC Severstal for 9 months of 2019 is 5.762 Gcal for tonnes of liquid steel.

“The main factors that influenced the reduction in the specific consumption of energy resources are the implementation of investment measures and operational control of energy consumption. Coke-blast furnace, steel-making and rolling production have shown high efficiency in the use of resources, "Vadim Germanov noted.

For 9 months of 2019, the production of its own electricity amounted to 3212.2 million kWh, thus the plant independently provides itself with electricity by 72.7%. During January-June of this year, CherMK completed the reconstruction of the turbine generator No. 5 at CHPP-PVS, the renewed unit was put into operation, which has already made it possible to achieve record figures for daily electricity generation - 13,838.9 thousand kWh.

Vadim Germanov emphasized that the company's task within the strategic priority "Leadership in costs" by 2025 to increase the share of its own generation in the total consumption to 95%.

"The work of new sources of generation is planned to be ensured by utilizing secondary energy resources - coke oven, blast furnace and converter gases" , -commented Vadim Germanov.
