EUROMETAL has received an official invitation from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to participate in a high-level virtual meeting on Monday, April 7, 2025, to discuss the impact of U.S. tariffs on the EU steel and aluminum sectors.
This invitation followed the recent announcement by the US administration on the imposition of duties on steel, aluminum and derivative products, including from the European Union. This event is expected to have significant implications for global trade and directly affect the European steel industry and supply chains.
In response, the European Commission has launched a revised steel and metals action plan, which comes into force on April 1, 2025 and aims to strengthen the EU's trade protection mechanisms. It is also preparing to introduce a new trade measure starting from July 1, 2026, which will replace the existing protective measures against steel.
The upcoming virtual meeting will be a strategic dialogue with key industry stakeholders aimed at gathering information on the real and expected impact of US tariffs on steel and aluminum in the EU, exploring the sector's proposals for an effective EU response, and helping shape the next phase of EU trade protection policy.
EUROMETAL welcomes this initiative and will actively participate in the discussions, continuing its mission to represent the interests of the European steel distribution, processing and trading sector.
We look forward to working with EU leaders and other industry leaders to ensure that the value chain in Europe remains strong, competitive and secure.
