TMK improves the quality requirements of gas cylinders

Pipe Metallurgical Company (TMK) participated in the revision of the interstate standard (GOST) for seamless steel cylinders for transportation, storage and use of gases (GOST 949-2023), as well as in the development and implementation of the first GOST (GOST R 71929-2025) for seamless steel cylinders for hydrogen gas. This was announced by Alexey Ushkov, head of the laboratory of cylinders at the Russian Scientific Research Institute of the Pipe Industry (RusNITI), part of TMK, at the XIII industry conference "Industrial Gases and Gas cylinders 2025".

The work on updating the standards is carried out in connection with the increase in product quality requirements in accordance with the needs of customers. The prepared documents include both improved existing and a set of new technical standards, advanced methods of quality control and testing. They also provide for new labeling of cylinders in order to increase convenience and safety during operation.

"The new standards take into account the use of special alloyed and non-alloyed steel grades, which improves the mechanical properties of metal cylinders and their reliability. At the same time, the requirements imposed according to the new GOST standards provide for an increase in gas capacity while reducing the mass of cylinders, as well as the possibility of manufacturing products with non-standard basic parameters. RusNITI, as the basic organization of the Technical Committee for Standardization TC 357 "Steel and Cast Iron Pipes and Cylinders", continues to work on improving interstate standards, in particular, work is underway to revise GOST 9731 for seamless steel cylinders with large capacity for gases," said Alexey Ushkov.

It is also planned to develop a national GOST R standard, which will include requirements for filling seamless steel, welded and composite cylinders for compressed and liquefied gases (except acetylene). Standardization of steel and cast iron pipes and cylinders is carried out by the Technical Committee for Standardization TC 357 under the leadership of Igor Pyshmintsev, Director General of RusNITI, Director of Scientific Work at TMK, in accordance with the order of the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart).
