Alexander M. Julius, President of EUROMETAL, participated in the latest edition of the European Commission's podcast "Compromise", dedicated to the commercial policy of the European Union.
In the episode titled "What happens to Steel?", examines the strategic importance of the steel sector for the economy and industrial future of Europe. During the discussion, it was emphasized that steel remains indispensable for the transition to environmentally friendly technologies and digital technologies, providing the basic materials needed for wind turbines, electric vehicles, infrastructure and advanced manufacturing.
The podcast also examines the serious challenges currently facing the European steel industry, including persistently high energy costs, global overcapacity, and increasing pressure from subsidized imports. Against this background, the group is discussing the new measures of the European Union in the field of steel trade and their expected impact on the market.
Alexander Julius was joined by Sarah Rerbal, Head of Trade Policy at thyssenkrupp Steel, and Pauline Weinzierl from the European Commission.
Reflecting on the discussion, Alexander Julius welcomed the open exchange of views on the advantages and disadvantages of the new platform, while highlighting one of the key concerns raised by market participants: "I really enjoyed our discussion of the pros and cons of these measures. One of the main issues that we discussed was the late publication of the distribution of tariff quotas for specific countries. The delay in the announcement has created significant uncertainty for the steel industry at a critical stage in the implementation of the new steel trade regime in the EU."
This episode provides valuable information about the political goals behind the new steel trade regime in the EU, as well as the practical challenges faced by steel producers, distributors, service centers, and consumers during its implementation.
