Uralelectromed JSC (an enterprise of the UMMC metallurgical complex) produced 4 million tons of copper wire rod. The workshop has achieved this result in 20 years from the date of production foundation. The total length of wire rod produced over these years will be 8 million kilometers.
JSC Uralelectromed is one of the largest producers of copper wire rod in Russia. Its share in the domestic market is 40%. According to the chief engineer of the enterprise, Aleksey Korolev, the high-tech continuous casting and rolling line "Cotirod" (USA) allows the production of wire rod 8 and 10 mm with a quality that meets the requirements of international standards.
Wire rod technology begins with metal melting in an Asarco furnace with a capacity of 45 tons of copper per hour. From the mixer furnace, copper flows through troughs into the casting machine, where it crystallizes and forms a rectangular billet. Further, the continuously cast billet enters the rolling mill, where it passes successively through 14 rolling stands. Due to the reduction, the section of the workpiece is reduced to a diameter of 8 mm. The wire rod is then clarified, cooled, covered with a protective coating to prevent surface oxidation and wound into coils.
In the control rooms, you can see the WiCC (Widows Cotrol Ceter) software running, allowing you to monitor the production process. The automated control system monitors compliance with about 150 technological parameters, including energy consumption.
Over the course of 20 years, the smelting complex, casting machine and rolling mill have undergone a number of changes, which have increased efficiency and increased production capacity. Thus, the height of the shaft furnace was increased by 2 meters, which made it possible to improve the metal melting process. A system for automatic regulation of CO in the shaft furnace was introduced. As part of the energy saving program, an automatic mode of operation of the shaft furnace was introduced and replaced with asynchronous drives of the rolling stands. The oil supply and emulsion supply systems were modernized, which made it possible to improve the quality and reduce the number of unscheduled shutdowns. Automatic packing of wire rod and much more has been introduced.

The copper wire rod workshop was put into operation on October 1, 1999. It is equipped with a technological Cotirod (USA), which produces copper wire rod, and a line for the production of copper round wire from the electrical engineering firm Niehoff (Germany). The production capacity of the shop is 285 thousand tons of copper wire rod per year.
