NLMK Group updated targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2023

Press Releases

NLMK Group intends to continue reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2023 while increasing steel production. The target specific emissions will be 1.91 tonnes of CO 2 per tonne of steel, up from 1.98 tonnes in 2019 * (down 3.5%).

NLMK's mitigation program greenhouse gas emissions include a number of investment projects aimed at improving energy efficiency, reducing the consumption of carbon-containing fuels and developing decarbonization technologies.

For example, the launch in 2023 of a new power plant at the NLMK site using secondary resources - associated gases of steelmaking and blast furnace production - will reduce CO 2 emissions by 650 thousand tons (36 kg per ton of steel) annually. Introduction of new technologies for ore dressing at Stoilensky GOK in the period 2021-2023 will increase the iron content in the charge and reduce the fuel consumption of NLMK's blast furnaces, which will lead to a decrease in CO 2 emissions by an additional 800 thousand tons (44 kg per ton of steel) per year. In addition, NLMK Group is implementing a portfolio of research projects focused on the use of hydrogen in the production process, the recovery and utilization of CO 2 , and other areas of decarbonization.

“NLMK Group is consistently working to reduce the impact on the environment and climatic impact. The targets for reducing CO 2 emissions at the company's production sites are confirmed by a portfolio of specific projects. We are also testing innovative technologies that will enable us to implement the next step to reduce CO 2 emissions beyond the horizon of Strategy 2022, "commented Grigory Fedorishin, CEO of NLMK Group.

Over the past five years against the background of production growth, the company reduced the level of CO 2 emissions per ton of steel by 3% - from 2.04 in 2015 to 1.98 in 2019

* The indicator includes both direct emissions and the volume of greenhouse gases generated during the generation of electricity consumed in the production process (coverage areas 1 and 2 according to the methodology of the Greenhouse Gas Accounting Protocol approved by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development). In 2019, specific emissions and production volumes were adjusted for the impact of major overhauls in the first stages of NLMK, which led to a corresponding one-time decrease in indicators.
