Severstal improves its position in sustainability ratings

At the end of 2020, PJSC Severstal was recognized as the leader among Russian mining companies in the international rating of compliance with human rights CorporateHuma Rights Bechmark. Having scored 11 points out of 26 possible, the company also outperformed some large metallurgical corporations such as ArcelorMittal, POSCO and NippoSteel.

Among the key criteria for assessing the Corporate Huma Rights Bechmark rating is the integration of human rights issues into corporate governance, the availability of legal protection, response to alleged human rights violations and transparency of information. Severstal's Board of Directors approved the 2018 Human Rights Policy. The main information on the work to comply with human rights is reflected in the Report on corporate social responsibility and sustainable development, which the company prepares in accordance with international standards and publishes for nine years in a row. Since 2018, Severstal has been a member of the UN Global Compact, thereby confirming its commitment to human rights.

Severstal has also improved its results in a number of other ratings in the area of ​​sustainable development.

The international agency SAMS & P (formerly RobecoSAM), one of the key compilers of ratings in the ESG area, raised Severstal's rating by 7 points, from 41 to 48 points (out of 100 possible). SAM S&P noted steady improvement in information disclosure practices at Severstal. In 2017, the company's rating was 15 points, in 2018 - 36 points, in 2019 - 41 points. The greatest improvement in 2020 occurred due to the Ecology block, which is a natural reflection of the company's efforts to protect the environment and the implementation of programs to reduce emissions of pollutants and discharges into water bodies. They also noted the success of Severstal in preserving biodiversity and the company's climate strategy, which provides for a 3% reduction in the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2020 by 2023.

In 2020, Severstal also confirmed its inclusion in the investment the FTSE4Good Idex Series index and improved its positions in it, gaining 3.5 points out of 5 possible. The index is compiled on the basis of the FTSE4Good ESG rating and is intended to increase investment in companies that comply with the principles of sustainable development. All companies included in the FTSE4Good Idex Series meet the strictest environmental, social and governance criteria.
