The Board of Directors of PJSC Severstal, one of the world's leading steel gambling companies, approved the disclosure from Q1 2021 of data on the level of occupational injuries, namely LTIFR, not only for its own personnel, but also for contractors working at the company's production sites. At the same time, contractors have been included in the perimeter of top management's personal safety goals since 2021. Improving the level of labor safety is included in the number of Severstal's key performance indicators. The annual remuneration of a number of top executives, including the CEO of Severstal, directly depends on the Company's performance in the field of occupational safety.

Severstal aims to completely eliminate fatal injuries and devotes a significant part of its efforts to engaging safety issues not only for employees and managers of all levels, but also for the personnel of contracting organizations performing work on the territory of the company. Strict safety requirements apply to them, and liability for violations is regulated by special agreements, but, unfortunately, the results of the number of injuries among contractors cannot satisfy us. We have done a great job and made significant progress in improving the level of safety for our employees - the number of injuries in the company over the past ten years has decreased by 2.5 times, the LTIFR indicator for the same period - from 1.33 to 0.65, and in the first quarter reached 0.50. The management of the company is ready to take responsibility for the injuries of the middle contractors. We understand that by doing so we significantly increase the level of responsibility of leaders in the field of occupational safety and the ambition of our internal goals in this area. But we are sure that the practices developed in the company and the initiatives planned for the coming years will allow us to achieve them, ”commented Alexander Shevelev, CEO of Severstal.

In 2020, the company adopted a new Strategy for labor protection and industrial security. It involves five main steps:

  1. focus on deadly risks, which implies an integrated work of the flood-10 main risk factors;
  2. revision of approaches to internal audit - now the company evaluates even the events, not having consequences, but being a potential danger to personnel;
  3. revision of the process of internal investigation of incidents, considering them as a combination of three factors - technical, procedural and behavioral;
  4. focus on identifying systemic, organizational causes of incidents , using modern methods of analysis;
  5. strengthening communications with employees.

The company is actively introducing innovative technologies to improve safety (machine vision, control systems, etc.). This work is carried out in three directions:

  • prevention of violations by employees of direct prohibitions,
  • exclusion of a person from entering the danger zone (elimination of danger),
  • monitoring the status of employees and prevention of dangers associated with its deterioration.

So, for example, To prevent incidents of a collision of a railway car and a scoop with scrap metal in the steel production of CherMK, a machine vision camera is installed. An algorithm has been developed for alerting when the crane operators put the scoop too close to the railway tracks. Assessment of personnel training using innovative training methods (every shift testing of workers, 3D polygons, VR simulators).

In 2020 A total of 5.5 billion rubles were allocated for activities in the field of labor protection and industrial safety. In 2018, the company announced its public safety goals, which include a 50% reduction in LTIFR by 2025 from 2017 levels, as well as the elimination of fatal injuries. By the end of 2020, this goal has already been achieved by 64%.
