Severstal and NOVATEK agreed to cooperate in the field of alternative and hydrogen energy and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

PAO Severstal and NOVATEK at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2021 signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of alternative and hydrogen energy and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

The signatories were made by the Chairman Alexey Mordashov, PJSC Severstal Board of Directors, and Leonid Mikhelson, Chairman of the NOVATEK Management Board.

The memorandum provides for consideration of a joint pilot project for the production of blue hydrogen from natural gas using carbon dioxide capture and storage technologies. The parties intend to jointly develop requirements, standards and engineering solutions for the production and supply of hydrogen transport pipelines, turbines, hydrogen storage systems and containers for hydrogen transportation.

The companies also agreed to cooperate in the production and supply of hydrogen, development of technological solutions for the use of fuel based on hydrogen and its carriers, including ammonia.

“Severstal, sharing the global goals of decarbonizing world economies, is working on a number of solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of its activities and expand the range of products sold through the production of carbon-free fuels. An example of such work is cooperation with our strategic partner - NOVATEK. We are confident that technologies and projects for the capture and disposal of CO2 and the production of hydrogen will grow rapidly in Russia and the world, opening up great potential for the development of our companies, ”commented Alexey Mordashov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of PJSC Severstal.
