Metalloinvest experts took part in the session “New Directions of Technological Development. Hydrogen energy - EnergyNet ", held as part of the intensive" Archipelago 2121 "in Veliky Novgorod.

As part of the hydrogen track on the Archipelago 2021, the participants determined the parameters that low-carbon hydrogen should have, worked out in detail the existing and promising opportunities for the production, transportation, storage and use of hydrogen, aspects of the development of hydrogen energy, the experience of large industrial companies in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the goals and objectives of creating hydrogen clusters, measures and mechanisms of state support. Based on the results of the meetings, beacon projects were prepared and presented for their further study and synchronization between the state and business.

“Hydrogen is a key link in the ongoing energy transition for the decarbonization of the global economy. At Metalloinvest's production sites, we are already working on 3 pilot projects to introduce hydrogen into metallization processes, which are included in the all-Russian project "Hydrogen Energy", - said Alexander Kozhevnikov, Director of the Strategic Development Department of Metalloinvest. “This year we plan to develop the Company's Hydrogen Strategy with a list of the main stages and measures for the widespread introduction of hydrogen into the processes of mining and metallurgical production in order to achieve the Company's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050”.

In 2021, Metalloinvest completed the development of its Climate Strategy. The company is committed to achieving carbon neutrality and maximizing greenhouse gas emissions from its customers by 2050 as its long-term benchmarks. Today Metalloinvest is the leader among metallurgical companies in terms of average CO2 emissions per ton of steel.

In July 2021, Metalloinvest signed a memorandum of understanding with Rusatom Overseas JSC and Air Liquide in order to study the possibility of organizing the production of low-carbon hydrogen. As part of their joint work, the parties plan to evaluate the technical and commercial aspects of a potential project for the production of environmentally friendly hydrogen for Metalloinvest's enterprises located in the Belgorod and Kursk regions.

"Archipelago 2121" is a project and educational intensive, within which a number of acceleration and business events are held, united by a common idea - creating a long-term image of the future of Russia with a horizon of 100 years, launching and developing new business projects based on on global trends and designing the necessary changes in public institutions.

Representatives of large companies, development institutions, research centers, ministries and departments, such as the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia, the Ministry of Energy of Russia, the EnergyNet infrastructure center, Rusnano, Rosatom, Skolkovo, took an active part in the discussion and others.
