Leading American auto industry associations are putting pressure on the government to take a tough stance against Chinese automakers, warning that any market opening for them could threaten the competitiveness, national security, and industrial base of the United States. In a letter seen by Reuters, five organizations representing automakers, dealers, and suppliers said China continues to make efforts to dominate the global automotive industry and gain access to the U.
S. market, and they argued that Washington should maintain the Commerce Department's 2025 cybersecurity rule, which effectively blocks imports into the country of almost all Chinese cars.
These groups also called on the administration to reject any attempts by Chinese manufacturers to circumvent these restrictions by manufacturing cars in the United States, saying the risks to the industry are almost the same regardless of whether the cars are imported or manufactured domestically. Their position could complicate President Donald Trump's expected visit to China on March 31, as Washington and Beijing try to stabilize relations after a tense period marked by China's tariffs and controls on rare earth exports.
The letter also criticizes Canada's decision to allow some Chinese cars to be imported into its market. The Chinese Embassy in Washington rejected these accusations, arguing that Chinese cars succeed through competition, innovation, and quality, rather than unfair practices, and noting that foreign automakers, including American companies, have long benefited from access to the Chinese market.
