JSW Steel, ArcelorMittal and NLMK may buy two Liberty Steel plants in Belgium

Indian JSW Steel, transnational corporation ArcelorMittal and Russian group NLMK have shown interest in acquiring the assets of Liberty Liege. It is the Belgian division of the British group Liberty Steel, which owns the Tilleur and Flemalle factories.

The Liberty Liege Flemalle plant is equipped with two production lines for hot dip galvanizing and the production of up to 1 million tons of galvanized steel per year. The capacity of the Liberty Liege Tilleur plant allows it to produce up to 200 thousand tons of tin annually.

Liberty Liege was on the verge of bankruptcy in 2022. The Belgian government denied her financial support. After that, Liberty Steel offered to sell 49% of the assets of Liberty Liege to the state investment company Sogepa, but the court rejected this idea.

In December, the court nevertheless protected Liberty Liege from creditors until April 2023 and allocated this time for its owners to search for buyers of the company's assets.
