Stegra joins SMALLER initiatives

Swedish steel company Stegra, formerly called H2GreenSteel, has joined the low-emission steel (LESS) standard, Kallanish reports.

LESS is a voluntary emissions standard that creates uniform and reliable labeling for low- and near-zero-emission steel.

After several European ArcelorMittal companies joined LESS earlier this summer (see Callanish on July 28), the initiative's participants currently account for about 45% of European steel production.

Stegra is scaling up the industrial impact in the process of building its first plant for large-scale production of environmentally friendly hydrogen, environmentally friendly cast iron and environmentally friendly steel in Boden, Sweden.

"For us, reliable and transparent labeling such as LESS is important to demonstrate the decarbonization level of our products and ensure access to future-oriented markets," says Niklas Vass, head of the production department at the Stegra plant in Boden. "We believe that LESS should be adopted as an official European designation for low or near zero levels."

"Stegra brings both technical excellence and a clear vision of sustainable development to our community," says Carmen Ostwald, General Secretary of LESS.

"Their participation strengthens our mission to create a coherent framework for low-emission steel production and accelerate the industry's transition to climate neutrality," she concludes.
