Salzgitter and Volvo Cars form a closed partnership

German steel company Salzgitter Group is expanding its partnership with Swedish automaker Volvo Cars, creating a closed loop. The steel manufacturer, which already supplies high-quality rolled steel to Volvo Cars' body manufacturing plant in Olofstrom, announced that it will supply significant amounts of scrap steel from this plant to its steel mills in 2026.

The steel scrap obtained at the Olofstrom plant will be sent to production. Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH ensures a continuous production cycle of the material without loss of quality.

Salzgitter supplies flat-rolled products to Sweden by rail using a single-carriage system. In the future, steel will be supplied to Volvo Cars and returned as scrap using an improved direct and fast transportation concept with short transportation times and maximum capacity utilization. Despite the length of the approximately 700-kilometer route between the two locations, a low-emission transport cycle will be created through the use of powerful, compatible locomotives that can carry heavy loads on trains, and 100 percent use of environmentally neutral electricity for traction.
