Salzgitter reports that long positions on H1 are better than low ones

In the first half of the year, Salzgitter continued to struggle with low market demand, and in most categories, profits were lower than a year ago, while long products performed better than flat products, Kallanish notes.

Crude steel production at its steel mill, the production volume of the division, which includes strip rolled products with an oxygen converter in Salzgitter and EDP-based long products in Pine, amounted to 2.49 million tons, which is 2.69 million tons less than in the first half of 2024.

The volume of deliveries of this division, which includes the strip and profiles, is almost equal to the same period last year. The corresponding period of 2024 is 2.8 million tons. The volume of orders decreased slightly below the level of the previous year, from 2.58 million tons to 2.46 million tons. The company notes that the volume of orders in the strip steel segment decreased due to weaker demand, while the long products segment remained almost stable.

The division's revenue was lower than in the previous year and amounted to 1.7 billion euros ($1.99 billion) against 1.81 billion euros, due to a significant decrease in the price of strip steel products. According to Salzgitter, sales in the long products segment increased year-on-year, driven by slightly higher supplies and prices, but he does not provide separate data on product groups.

In the Salzgitter Steel Process division, which manufactures pipes and rolled products, the number of orders decreased slightly from 911 million euros to 873 million euros. Due to lower supplies and selling prices, revenue decreased by about a quarter compared to the same period last year, including due to the separation of the stainless pipe division.

After a break of more than two years, the sheet metal production unit of lsenburger Grobblech GmbH, a manufacturer of defense steels, received its first partial approval from the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) in June. Its Secure 500 steel grade, ranging in thickness from 6 to 16 mm, has been approved for use by the military, in vehicles and protective systems. "We are in the process of approving other steel grades," the company notes.
