Stellantis intends to suspend production at several European plants in response to weak demand for cars and the downturn in the European automotive sector, Kallanish reports from trade union sources in Italy.
The stops scheduled for the end of September -October will last from one to three weeks, depending on the specific facility and car model. We are talking about such enterprises as Poissy in France, Pomigliano in Italy, Eisenach in Germany, Tychy in Poland, as well as Zaragoza and Madrid in Spain.
In July, Jean-Philippe Imparato, head of Stellantis Europe, warned of the possible closure of several factories across the continent.
According to Imparato, Stellantis risks being forced to close plants due to non-compliance with strict EU regulations on CO2 emissions. He pointed to what he called an overly strict decarbonization policy, unattainable environmental goals and unacceptable energy costs, especially in some EU member states. This is the reason for a significant decrease in the competitiveness of the industry.
Production of Stellantis passenger cars in 2024 decreased by 45.7% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 283,090 units. There were no improvements this year (see "Callanish passim").
Stellantis did not respond to a request for comment before the deadline.
