SSAB and the German defense and technology company Rheinmetall have signed an agreement of intent to supply steel that does not contain fossil fuels, according to the Swedish company Kallanish.
It stresses that the deal "marks an important milestone as Rheinmetall becomes the first manufacturer of defense equipment to use decarbonized steel in its production." SSAB states that Rheinmetall is a global supplier of systems for the defense sector and an innovator in the field of civilian technology.
The cooperation will begin with the supply of SSAB Zero steels steel, the volume of which will increase over time. SSAB steel, which does not contain fossil fuels and is manufactured using HYBRIT technology, will also be supplied in future shipments.
The steel mill describes its SSAB Zero line as the first commercial steel of its kind. "Through the use of recycled steel and non-fossil energy, fossil carbon emissions are virtually reduced to zero without compromising productivity or quality," it says.
