Swedish truck manufacturer Volvo says it has become the first truck manufacturer in the world to use fossil-free steel in its electric trucks, which are currently being delivered to customers.

Earlier this year Volvo has announced that it is starting to use fossil-free steel in the production of its trucks following a deal with Scandinavian steel giant SSAB in early 2021 to research the production of steel produced with a new technology based on green hydrogen.

Volvo began series production of its heavy duty electric 44-tonne trucks in September, some of which are now made from SSAB's fossil-free steel.

Fossil-free steel is used in frame guides electric truck, on which all the main components of the truck are installed. As the availability of non-fossil fuel steel increases, Volvo intends to start using it in other parts of the truck.

Volvo Trucks' introduction of non-fossil fuel steel fits well with the fact that around 30% materials used are obtained from recycled materials. Volvo also claims that up to 90% of their trucks' materials can be recycled at the end of their life.

“At Amazon, we are on track to be carbon neutral in all of our operations by 2040. We need partners like Volvo to make this transition happen,” said Andreas Marschner, VP Transport Services Europe at Amazon.

“Every step in the transition to green logistics brings us closer to a carbon-free society, which is why we are pleased to know that some of our new electric trucks, which will be delivered soon, are also made from fossil-fuel-free steel,” added Niklas Andersson, Executive Vice President.
