The Austrian steel company voestalpine has announced the completion of its new electric arc furnace at the Donavitz plant, where the key components of two furnaces, EAF 1 and EAF 2, have already been installed. ,
,According to the company, the lower and upper oven housings, as well as the oven covers, have already been installed. The assembly of heavy-duty rotating supports, including lifting cylinders and electrode mounting brackets for both electric arc furnaces, has also been completed. These components will form part of the central melting unit of the new production line. ,
,. . Electric arcs to reach temperatures up to 15,000 °C. , ,
,Each electric arc furnace uses three large graphite electrodes powered by three phases of the electrical network to produce electric arcs with temperatures reaching 15,000°C. The resulting energy will be used to melt the feedstock for subsequent steelmaking processes. ,
,EDP will mainly use steel scrap, while hot-rolled cast iron (HBI) will also be used to improve the quality of steel and maintain a constant chemical composition. Depending on the required grade of steel, lime, dolomite, carbon, and alloying elements, including chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and manganese, can also be added during melting. ,
,. . Work on the scrap transfer system continues, , ,
,Meanwhile, work on the scrap transfer system is also continuing. Trolleys for scrap transshipment will transport the material from the scrap yard to the EDP, and the scrap baskets will be transported to the furnace shop via an underground conveyor system. The scrap baskets have already been fully assembled and mounted on trolleys for reloading. ,
,Voestalpine stated that the new EDP plant, consisting of two furnaces, will form the basis for modern and resource-efficient steel production in Donavica. ,
