ArcelorMittal will supply steel with a reduced carbon footprint for coinage

ArcelorMittal has won a contract to supply low—carbon steel to the Paris Mint, a French institution that issues euro coins for the French and European central banks.

The delivery will include blanks for coins in denominations of 1 euro, as well as 2 and 5 cents. This is the first time that low-emission steel will be used in the manufacture of euro cent coins.

The company will supply XCarb cold-rolled steel produced from recycled and renewable raw materials by ArcelorMittal Europe Flat Products. The metal will be processed at the company's service center in Ottmarsheim, France, where the steel will be cut in accordance with the requirements of coin production.

The Paris Mint intends to purchase about 800 tons of low-carbon steel annually. According to the company's calculations, XCarb provides a 68% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional blast furnace steel: the carbon footprint of the material is about 800 kg of CO2e per ton versus about 2500 kg of CO2e per ton for traditional steel.

Aisha Novak, Director of Procurement at the Paris Mint, said that the partnership is in line with the institution's strategy until 2027, in which the transition to cleaner energy and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions are central.

"We are taking another concrete step towards achieving our goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 50%, while introducing a more integrated approach to coin production," she said.

The collaboration was the result of almost a decade of technical cooperation between the two companies.
