The German steel industry association WV Stahl has warned that the expected increase in fees for electric grid services in 2027 will increase price pressure on steel producers. The association called for maintaining budget support in the amount of 6.5 billion euros in full and on an ongoing basis.
In a statement issued on October 1, 2026, the association referred to preliminary data from four German backbone network operators — 50Hertz, Amprion, TenneT Germany and TransnetBW. These calculations show that electricity transmission tariffs may increase by more than 20% in 2027.
WV Stahl stressed that changes in the financing system of the electric grid complex and the reduction of budget support create an additional burden on the industry. According to the association, the assistance provided at the beginning of this year should be maintained on a permanent basis.
The association believes that the expected new increase in network tariffs confirms the need to maintain the full support volume of 6.5 billion euros.
The Association separately noted that energy costs in Germany remain uncompetitive by international standards and put serious pressure on the steel sector. Businesses need affordable electricity, including moderate grid charges, to remain competitive and continue investing in Germany.
The statement also says that amid the worsening situation in the Middle East and rising energy prices, the industry needs more support rather than additional costs.
WV Stahl recalled that the resumption of budget assistance to cover network costs has significantly reduced previously sharply increased electricity transmission tariffs. The association believes that it is impossible to abandon this decision.
