World Steel Association: Crude steel production down 3.3% in January 2023

Global steel production in 63 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) amounted to 145.3 million tons (Mt) in January 2023, which is 3.3% less than in January 2022.

The association estimates that China produced 79.5 million tonnes in January 2023, up 2.3% from January 2022.

India produced 10.9 million tons, down 0.2%. Japan produced 7.2 million tons, down 6.9%.

The United States produced 6.5 million tons, down 6.8%.

It is estimated that Russia produced 5.8 million tons, which is 8.9% less. South Korea produced 5.5 million tons, down 9.8%.

Germany produced 2.9 million tons, which is 10.2% less.

Brazil produced 2.8 million tons, down 4.9%.

It is estimated that Iran produced 2.7 million tons, up 27.7%.

Turkey produced 2.6 million tons, down 17.6%

Steel production by region

Africa produced 1.2 million tons in January 2023, down 4.9% from January 2022.

Asia and Oceania produced 107.5 million tons, down 0.2%.

The EU (27) produced 10.3 million tons, which is 15.2% less. Europe, other countries produced 3.3 million tons, which is 17.5% less.

The Middle East produced 3.8 million tons, up 19.7%.

North America produced 9.1 million tons, down 5.6%.

Russia and other CIS countries + Ukraine produced 6.5 million tons, which is 24.9% less.

South America produced 3.6 million tons, down 0.6%.
