The European Commission has announced the cost of the Carbon Dioxide Emission Control Mechanism (CBAM) certificate for the second quarter of 2026 at 75.28 euros per ton. The recently announced price is slightly lower than the 75.36 euros per ton set for the first quarter of 2026. According to the European Commission, prices for CBAM certificates will be set quarterly during 2026. Prices for four certificates will be announced during the year, with each price applying only to embedded emissions of CBAM-covered goods imported into the European Union during the relevant quarter. The Commission stated that quarterly prices for certificates will be calculated based on the average auction price under the Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). This methodology is designed to ensure fair and consistent alignment with the EU carbon market. Starting in 2027, prices for CBAM certificates will be calculated and published weekly. The Commission also reminded CBAM authorized declarants that they will start purchasing certificates from February 2027 to cover imports made during 2026. He added that the early publication of prices for certificates is intended to increase cost predictability, provide timely information to stakeholders, and reduce uncertainty arising from informal estimates of market prices.
