Minamaneho of Ukraine: Europe is moving away from coal consumption

About 18 countries of the European continent plans to stop the mining and burning of coal and thus reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reports portal.

the shift away from coal is an important step in fighting global warming, because it is the dirtiest fuel. According to open sources, Germany is preparing to abandon the consumption of coal in the year 2038; the UK - by 2025, France to 2022; Greece - until 2028; Hungary till 2030. Also refused to develop the coal industry in Japan, Portugal and the Netherlands.

Analyzing European experience, the Ministry of energy and the environmental protection of Ukraine noted that the shift away from coal and transition to renewable energy is a General trend towards maintaining an environmentally sustainable future for our children, and part of the commitment to combat climate change, which the EU undertook in the framework of the ambitious "European green deal" and the Paris agreement of 2015.

Transition of the EU towards climate neutral economy is connected not only with necessity of performance of legal obligations and political commitments, but also change the mentality of Europeans and the massive climate strikes young people. According to which the use of fossil fuels, particularly coal, is not only a destructive influence on the atmosphere, land and water resources, flora and fauna, which is seen in the collapse of the mountain massif above the treatment workings, draining aquifers, but also threatens human health.

Ukraine also faced the issue of abandoning the burning of solid fuels, particularly coal. During the world economic forum in Davos the President of the International business Council (Germany) Joe Kaiser urged Ukraine to move to renewable energy sources and shift away from coal by 2030 to reduce emissions, accelerate decarbonization and preservation of health of citizens.

recently, the Minister of energy and the environmental protection of Ukraine Alexey Orzhel presented the Concept of "green" energy Ukraine's transition to 2050, which provides for the complete replacement of coal generation and the transition of Ukraine's economy, which is based on the use of fossil fuels - coal, oil, gas, climate neutral economy in the long term.

Main indicators set by Minamaneho to be run in accordance with the Concept, are:

  • energy efficiency because not every kW of power generated is environmental, and each hryvnia invested in energy efficiency returns through the multiplier 3 UAH;
    • increase the share of clean fuels to 70% by 2050;
      • the decrease in the share of extractive industries in the economy and, accordingly, the complete replacement of coal-fired power plants by 2050;
        • integration of energy markets of Ukraine with the European.

        Now Minamaneho together with representatives of local authorities and international partners develops complex solutions to reform the public sector coal industry.

        Particular attention is paid to the government will minimize the possible negative impact on the socio-economic and ecological situation in coal mining regions. Developed and implemented a comprehensive program aimed at social reconversion of regions; mitigating social and environmental impacts of restructuring; development and implementation of employment and psychological support to former employees of mining enterprises; attracting energy efficient designs and technologies in the process of restructuring of coal enterprises taking into account the successful experiences of member countries of the European Union.
