Chemical-mechanical polishing with amorphous particles in metallurgy

Description of the technology and its scope in practice in heavy industry.

Polishing with amorphous particles is a relatively new direction in the industry, which is rapidly gaining popularity and shows the highest efficiency among all surface polishing methods existing today.

Amorphous particles are substances whose atoms do not have a clear structural arrangement, which allows them to take almost any shape and fill any space.

The technology is universal and can be used for polishing hard, soft, inert, water-soluble materials, which cannot be said about other types of polishing compositions based on abrasive particles that are used for polishing.

To understand how amorphous particles work, you can imagine an optical lens. The surface of the lens must be perfect (mirror-smooth). Only in this way will the lens be able to perform its functions.

Classic polishing compositions contain abrasive particles having a crystalline structure. When polished, they do not completely fill the space of scratches and microscopic chips of the lens in question, and in some cases bring even more damage and defects to the surface.

For this reason, when using classical chemical-mechanical polishing, a high percentage of defective products is observed in production. Polishing with amorphous particles solves this problem.

Amorphous particles delicately fill the entire space of chips and scratches for removal of layers and polishing, minimize the risk of marriage, make it possible to obtain an ideal mirror-smooth surface. This type of polishing is financially more attractive, reliable and easy to use.

Today, one of the few in the world who successfully uses amorphous particles for polishing surfaces is AEM Technologies (a resident of the Skolkovo center). The company is already integrating the technology in various industries in our country.

Research and experience in the practical use of amorphous particle polishing technology proves that this approach is the future. And heavy industry, with sufficient information about the new method, will adopt it in the very near future.
