The Ministry of Natural Resources confirmed the effectiveness of MMK's environmental program to improve the quality of atmospheric air in Magnitogorsk

Press Releases
At the end of 2018, Magnitogorsk was excluded from the list of cities with the most polluted air, according to a report by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Russia. Thanks to MMK's large-scale environmental program, the city's integrated air pollution index will reach a low level by 2025.

The draft state report “On the State and Protection of the Environment of the Russian Federation in 2018” has been published on the website of the Ministry of Natural Resources. It indicates that the environmental situation in Magnitka has improved significantly. "In Magnitogorsk, compared to the previous year, the concentration of benzo (a) pyrene has decreased by more than two times," the authors of the document state.

the environment, - noted Pavel Shilyaev, General Director of PJSC MMK. - According to the results of last year, the company successfully carried out 69 environmental measures. One of the latest large-scale environmental projects of MMK was the launch in July of this year of a new sinter plant equipped with the best available technologies: in addition to improving production performance, it will ensure a halving of dust emissions in sinter production, sulfur dioxide - four times, benzo (a) pyrene - 16 times. ”

Last year, according to the report of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works increased investments in environmental protection measures by 27% - up to 8.968 billion rubles. As a result, it was possible to reduce the mass of emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere by 1.1 thousand tons compared to the previous year. Progress has been achieved in other areas of environmental protection: for example, MMK stopped discharging wastewater into the Magnitogorsk reservoir and switched to a completely closed recycling water supply system with 100% reuse of wastewater in technological processes. Waste disposal (excluding waste rock) in 2018 decreased by 122 thousand tons (9.2%).

MMK intends to further reduce its impact on the atmosphere: in accordance with the strategic initiative "Clean City" In 2025, the integrated air pollution index in Magnitogorsk is planned to be brought to a level below 5 units. As part of this initiative, in recent years, the company has completed the reconstruction of sulfur trapping units in the sinter shop with a total investment of more than 4 billion rubles, modernized the gas cleaning unit in the electric steel-smelting shop with a total investment of 1.9 billion rubles, and built aspiration systems for the casting yards of blast furnaces No. 9 and 10 worth 1.2 billion rubles.

In 2019, construction began on a complex of a new coke oven battery No. 12 with a capacity of 2.5 million tons per year. Commissioning is scheduled for 2021. As a result, five old coke oven batteries will be taken out of service, and emissions will decrease by 11,350 tons. In 2024, it is planned to launch a complex of a new blast furnace No. 11 with a capacity of 3.7 million tons of pig iron per year. Three old blast furnaces will be taken out of service and emissions will be reduced by 6,600 tons. Both facilities - a new coke oven battery and a new blast furnace complex - will correspond to the best available world technologies.

For the period from 2018 to 2025, MMK will allocate more than 38 billion rubles for new environmental projects, including 21.7 billion rubles - for air protection measures. The total costs of the enterprise for environmental protection in the period from 2000 to 2018 exceeded 58 billion rubles.
