The EU may even more limit steel imports after the US decision on tariffs

The European Union is considering the possibility of further restrictions on the imports of steel to protect its domestic manufacturers of steel after the US decision to introduce 25 percent additional duties on imports from all countries without exception and withdrawals.

Deputy General Director for the Trade of the European Commission, Leopoldo Rubinchachchi, said that the review of protective measures had already begun, and it is planned to be completed by the end of March this year. Rubinchachi also added that the European commission will consider the possibility of extending protective measures or taking an alternative mechanism after the mid -2026.

According to the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO), protective measures can only be used during the maximum period at eight years. In this case, EU measures will expire during the second term of US President Donald Trump in mid -2026.

In 2018, the EU introduced a quota system by quarters and countries to prevent the flood of the region with steel products and damage to domestic industry.
