Metinvest 20: environmental transformation of Zaporizhstal

This is exactly the approach the company has implemented. At the same time, each major investment project solved environmental problems: it reduced emissions into the atmosphere, reduced resource consumption, introduced closed water use cycles and returned industrial waste to reuse.

Many of the solutions implemented in Zaporizhstal subsequently became a reference point for other enterprises of the mining and metallurgical industry of Ukraine.

In 2013, while on a visit to the environmental modernization sites of Zaporizhstal, a Ukrainian businessman and founder of the Metinvest Group, which includes

The Zaporizhstal plant has great traditions. And we have huge ambitions. But we have two main tasks: economics and ecology. The global steel markets are experiencing a crisis today, and we will actively support modernization. I am convinced that we will build a strong economy.

Even closer to energy independence

In December 2012, a high-tech basic coal composition was launched in Zaporizhia, which complemented the complex of the pulverized coal fuel injection unit, which was put into operation. This was an important step towards energy independence for the plant: blast furnace production received an alternative to natural gas.

The technology involves grinding coal to a pulverized state, followed by blowing into the furnace of a blast furnace. This made it possible to partially replace natural gas in the production process and increase the productivity of blast furnaces by an average of 10-15%.

In addition to the economic effect, the project contributed to a more rational use of energy resources and increased production sustainability.

The total investment in the project amounted to UAH 1 billion, of which UAH 350 million. It is aimed at building the basic composition of coal.

Agglomashinam – modern bag filters

Traditionally, sinter production, the main source of industrial dust, has remained the greatest environmental challenge for the plant. Therefore, its modernization has become one of the priorities of the environmental program of Zaporizhstal.

Since 2012, the plant has gradually updated the gas purification systems of all six sintering machines. First, sinter No. 1 received a modern electrostatic precipitator, and sinter No. 2-6 received bag filters, which demonstrated significantly higher cleaning efficiency. Subsequently, a similar solution was implemented on sinter No. 1.
