An apron was installed at the Polymetals Production Plant for cleaning gases

Kirovgrad (Sverdlovsk Region)

In the Polymetal Production Branch of Uralelectromed JSC (an enterprise of the UMMC metallurgical complex), during the scheduled repair of converter No. 1, a protective seal was manufactured and installed for one of the main units of the metallurgical workshop .

The innovation is the sealing of the dust plate with a metal structure, which is located on both sides of the neck of the converter. The installed "apron" covers the distance between the converter and the dust cover, which, as metallurgists expect, will reduce air leakage and significantly reduce the volume of gases that enter the dust plant. The expected effect of the introduction is a reduction in energy consumption for gas cleaning. Another positive moment from the innovation is the reduction of the risks of exhaust gases from the converter into the shop, and, as a result, the improvement of the air in the working area in the converter department.

- The idea of creating such a device is not new, - says the head of the converter department of the metallurgical plant Vladislav Borisov. “We tried different materials and designs, but high temperatures and high vacuum were only able to be found in the metal fence. The design itself is adapted specifically for the ascending-type dust covers installed in the department.

The protective seal on the converter in the form of an apron is a joint development of the engineering staff of the metallurgical shop, specialists of the design and development department of the branch. The new design was made according to the drawings by the craftsmen of the centralized equipment repair shop.

- When working on the project, we completely abandoned the use of any mechanical shutters or other technical devices that seal the gap between the converter and the dust cover, - explains the engineer - designer of the production and design department (PKO) Alexey Shikanov. - I took a cylinder-shaped converter for a body of revolution, each point of which makes a revolution around an axis with a constant radius. Geodetic engineers of the General Planning Bureau of the PKO carried out an executive survey of converter # 1, dust cover and related objects. Further, the actual dimensions of the survey "laid down" on the installation drawings of the converter and the dust cover, and the 3D model allowed us to “twist” the converter and select the minimum clearance using additional rounded side screens installed in the lower part of the dust cover.

Now new the device is run-in on converter # 1, where all the design and quality characteristics of the new “apron” will be evaluated in the process. By the end of this year, equip all converters of the metallurgical shop with such devices.
