How to choose an uninterruptible power supply for home appliances

Useful

There are situations when there is a sudden power outage. In this scenario, power is lost to many devices, including desktop computers. This may result in equipment failure, data loss, etc. For such cases, there is an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). What is this device and how to choose? We tell.

What are uninterruptible power supplies

A UPS is a device that provides power to connected equipment during power outages. Depending on the design features, uninterruptible power supplies can be divided into three main types.

Offline-UPS - characterized by simplicity of design and power from the network (the battery is recharged when necessary). The cost of such models is low, but the battery life, too.

An online UPS is a more expensive solution than a standalone UPS. Many models use double conversion technology. It is worth noting that online UPSs are highly resistant to any power surges and interference. They are often recommended to companies and very demanding users, for example, to keep servers powered in the event of a sudden failure.

A line-interactive UPS has much in common with an offline UPS, but, among other things, provides a shorter response time to voltage fluctuations.

Why using an uninterruptible power supply is important

The UPS is the main equipment of every office. In the event of prolonged power failures, the lack of power can lead to complete paralysis of the company for long hours. This can lead to direct financial losses, so organizations cannot afford the risks associated with power surges or power outages.

An emergency power supply is important not only in the office, but also at home. For example, quite often due to sudden power surges, a home computer or other valuable equipment fails. Although UPSs are not the cheapest solution, they minimize losses.

What to look for when choosing a UPS

To fully utilize the potential of the device, several factors need to be analyzed.

First of all, it is the purpose of using the device. Depending on how much and what power of the equipment will be connected, the UPS power is calculated, which should exceed the total of all connected devices.

You should also check the battery life. This is the period during which the UPS will ensure the operation of connected equipment during a power outage. If the manufacturer promises at least 6 minutes of work, we can assume that the technique deserves attention.
