11 miners died on Monday when a lift fell at the Impala Platinum mine in the town of Rustenburg in South Africa's North West Province. This was reported on Tuesday by local media.
“The lift transporting miners up and down the mine unexpectedly fell from a height of 200 meters,” said a report by local TV channel eNCA.
The incident The platinum miner said in a statement that the incident at Mine 11 involved 86 workers and 75 injured workers were admitted to four hospitals in the area.
The company said all mining operations at the sprawling Rustenburg complex in South Africa's northwestern province had been suspended on Tuesday.
“Today "This is the darkest day in Impala Platinum's history and our hearts are heavy for the lives lost and affected by this devastating incident," said company CEO Nico Muller.
Impala is among South African platinum producers , which operate some of the deepest and oldest mines in the world.
The incident is currently under investigation.
