India needs a multi-vector transition to clean mobility: Renault India CEO

Renault India CEO Stephane Deblaise said that India's transition to new mobility should be based on pragmatism, technological diversity and consideration of the country's energy constraints, presenting an extensive roadmap for the development of new energy vehicles at the ETAuto EV Conclave 2025 conference, ETAuto reports.

Given that the share of electric vehicles in passenger car sales in India is approaching 4%, and the number of hybrid vehicles is expected to reach 1.7 million units by 2030, he noted that India is creating a "mosaic of technologies" rather than seeking a single solution by combining electric vehicles, hybrids, compressed natural gas vehicles and flexible fuel vehicles to achieve significant reductions in CO₂ emissions. Drawing on global examples — Japan's market dominated by hybrid vehicles, China's balanced mix of new energy vehicles, and Europe's restored hybrid momentum — Deblez highlighted consumer pragmatism and similar behaviors in India, where hybrid vehicles already account for about 8% of sales. He warned that policy should be shaped by engineering realities, noting the weight and cost of large batteries for electric vehicles and outlining clear emission advantages for internal combustion engine, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and BEV technologies. He noted that the instability of renewable energy sources and limited storage capacity in India further justify the need for a diversified approach.

With the rapidly growing electric vehicle market projected to reach 10 million sales per year by 2030, Deblaise urged industry representatives and policy makers to remain realistic as they strive for the ultimate goal: creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable ecosystem of mobility for future generations.
