Austria to increase crude steel production in May

According to worldsteel, Austria increased steel production in May compared to the previous month.

The production volume amounted to 690,137 tons, which is 11.6% more than in the previous month and 1.3% year-on-year, Kallanish notes.

In January-May, the country produced 3.06 million tons of steel, compared with 3.2 million tons in the same period last year.

According to the data, Austria remained in 23rd place in the ranking of the world's largest steel producers.

Total production in the EU in May was 3.1% lower than in the previous year, to 11.36 million tonnes. Production in January-May amounted to almost 55 million tons, compared with 56.3 million tons in the same period last year.

Austrian steel manufacturer voestalpine will supply steel to Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD for its new automotive plant in Hungary (see Kallanish passim). The company was chosen by BYD because of its geographical proximity to the plant in Hungary, as well as because of the high quality and impeccable reputation of Austrian steel, the Chinese company said.

Voestalpine has previously expressed mixed feelings about U.

S. steel tariffs, as the firm operates several U.

S. manufacturing sites that it believes it plans to expand, while actual imports of Austrian goods to the United States are limited. The steel company recently commissioned a profile rolling line at its hot rolled pipe mill in Kindberg, Styria.
