According to worldsteel, Austria increased steel production in February compared to the previous month.
The production volume amounted to 560,000 tons, which is 9.6% less than in the previous month, but 4.7% more than in the same period last year, Kallanish notes.
According to the data, Austria remained in 22nd place in the ranking of the world's largest steel producers in February.
In January-February, the country produced 1.18 million tons of steel, compared with 1.1 million tons in the first two months of 2025, reflecting a general downward trend in production in the EU and the world.
Total production in the EU in February decreased by 3.6% year-on-year to 9.83 million tons. Production in January-February was 20 million tons, compared with almost 20.6 million tons in the first two months of 2025.
The Austrian company voestalpine Stahl has selected Primetals Technologies to modernize the laminar strip cooling line at its 5,000-ton-per-year hot rolling (HSM) plant in Linz. The company is also cutting production and laying off employees in Austria and Germany, as it does not expect the economic situation to improve in the coming months (see Kallanish passim).
In the first financial half of the year - from April to September 2025 – the group's revenue decreased by 5.6% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 7.6 billion euros (9.1 billion dollars). Consolidated profit before taxes increased by 12% to 278 million euros, while profit after taxes increased by 8.6% to 199 million euros.
