Tata Steel UK, a subsidiary of Indian steel producer Tata Steel Limited, has announced the signing of a contract with a local company, Systems Group, to carry out the first stage of modernization of its two steel mills in Port Talbot, South Wales. The Systems Group will perform important structural work on the continuous casting machines and replace more than 1.5 miles of pipelines, extending the service life of the continuous casting machines.
Extending the service life of the continuous casting machines will support the company's efforts to sustainably produce low-carbon steel in preparation for the commissioning of the new production facility.- by the end of 2027, a modern electric arc furnace will be built. Once operational, the EDP is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Port Talbot by about 90%.
"This work will bring the existing casting machines to the best condition for processing steel from our new electric arc furnace in the volumes and quality required by our customers," Ian Ellis, Head of Engineering Project at Tata Steel UK, said.
