British Tata Steel, a subsidiary of Indian steel producer Tata Steel Limited, has signed a key contract with Swiss energy and automation technology supplier ABB to supply electrification and advanced technological processes for the reconstruction of the steel mill in Port Talbot in Wales worth 1.25 billion pounds. As previously reported by SteelOrbis, this major upgrade is related to the construction of a 320-ton electric arc furnace (EDP), which is expected to be commissioned in 2028 and is funded by the UK government in the amount of 500 million pounds.
The collaboration is the cornerstone of Tata Steel's decarbonization plan, which aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by 90 percent at the Port Talbot plant, equivalent to 1.5 percent of the UK's total direct emissions. The company plans to reduce emissions by 30% by 2030 and eliminate the use of fossil fuels by 2045.
