According to the French Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industry, in the period from January to May 2025, France recorded a decrease in both imports and exports of steel products.
Imports of the main types of steel products and ferroalloys amounted to 3.91 billion euros, a decrease of 12.7% year-on-year. The main categories included steel pipes worth 852 million euros (-6.3%), cold-rolled steel worth 225.18 million euros (+3.9%), cold-rolled steel strip worth 283.34 million euros (-9.7%), cold-drawn wire worth 211.73 million euros (-3.8%) and 1.11 billion euros (-3.8%). metal structures and parts (-5.4%).
Exports of basic steel products and ferroalloys reached 4.01 billion euros in the same period, which is 4.9% less than in the previous year. France supplied steel pipes for 524.89 million euros (-8.9%), cold-rolled steel for 189.03 million euros (-0.9%), cold-rolled steel strips for 265.54 million euros (-23.9%), cold-drawn wire for 124.47 million euros (-13.9%) and metal structures for 372.02 million euros and spare parts for them (-0.6%).
Meanwhile, the latest data from the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Research (INSEE) shows that industrial production increased by 3.5% month-on-month in June 2025, after falling by 1.2% in May. In April–June, industrial production grew by 0.2% year-on-year and by 0.7% compared to the previous quarter.
The production of base metals and finished metal products increased by 0.2% in June after falling by 2.4% in May. In June, the passenger car, trailer and semi-trailer sector saw monthly growth of 1.1%, following a decline of 1.9% in May. On the contrary, the volume of construction work in June decreased by 0.4% month–on-month after a decrease of 0.5% in May and was 1.1% lower in April-June compared to the first quarter.
