Thyssenkrupp strip mill upgrade improves efficiency and digital readiness

SMS has successfully completed the modernization of automation systems in the winding shop of thyssenkrupp Steel Europe hot rolling mill No. 1 in Duisburg, Kallanish notes.

Originally built and commissioned by SMS, the plant produces high-quality flat rolled carbon steel products of a wide range of grades and sizes. According to the supplier, the upgrade ensures efficiency, reliability and digital readiness.

The project aimed to upgrade the automation systems of the 1st level and the human-machine interface (HMI) for the three winding machines of the mill, which solved the problems associated with outdated spare parts and outdated operating systems. The company has implemented improvements to the Process Control System (TCS) and HMI, which significantly optimized the operation of the winding machine.

According to SMS, the key point of the upgrade was the integration of the SMS group X — Pact ProBAS software platform in combination with the integrated X —Pact controllers. "In addition, the HMI update has enabled the introduction of modern visualization with ergonomic faceplates, improving user interaction and diagnostic capabilities. These measures ensure the continued availability of equipment and create a solid foundation for future digitalization initiatives," the statement said.

"With this recent upgrade, we have implemented high-speed control and modern communication technologies to ensure efficient and stable operation at the hot rolling plant," says SMS Service Manager Michael Wirtz.

Thyssenkrupp previously stated that it expects revenue growth from minus 2% to plus 1% during the fiscal year to September 2026. The Group is in close talks with Jindal Steel, which is considering a takeover of tk Steel.
