The renewed member of the European Parliament, Canfin, calls for making ETS an investment instrument’

Pascal Canfin, Renew coordinator at ENVI's environment committee, told Contexte that EU carbon market reform would be considered successful if it accelerated investments in European decarbonization.

According to him, this should be matched by higher demand for products such as environmentally friendly steel and cement, and additional measures, such as the Law proposed by the Commission to Accelerate Industrial Production, will help create this demand.

Canfin said it "doesn't quite agree" with the Commission's July 17 proposal to use ETS quotas to buy international carbon credits and finance investments outside Europe.

But he said that quality can be guaranteed thanks to standards developed by major development banks such as Germany's KfW.
