Representatives of Germany’s steel industry and politicians will meet on November 16 in Salzgitter for the National Steel Summit, organized by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economic Affairs, Kallanish reports.
The political side of the event will include the heads of government and economy ministers from the country’s two largest steel-producing regions — Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. The industry will be represented by executives from SHS Stahl-Holding Saar, GMH Gruppe, Swiss Steel, ArcelorMittal Germany and other companies. Gunnar Groebler of Salzgitter will attend as the current chairman of the national steel industry association WV Stahl and as one of the summit’s hosts, alongside representatives of the Lower Saxony government.
The main outcome of the one-day meeting is expected to be a joint document from representatives of the steel industry and the IG Metall union. The union will send its deputy chairman, Jürgen Kerner, to the summit.
This is the largest event of its kind since two smaller meetings held a year earlier, in November 2026.
The invitation to the summit includes a link to a dedicated website: https://stahlgipfel2026.de/.
A new source of friction between IG Metall and steel industry employers emerged on the eve of the meeting. On Monday, the union called for a 5% pay rise for steelworkers. Employers rejected the demand immediately.
