The largest aluminum producer in the world, Norsk Hydro has made some progress in rebuilding its operations, but has not yet returned to normal following a cyber ransomware attack, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.
After the attack began late Monday night, the company had to shut down several extrusion factories and rolled products that convert aluminum ingots into components needed by a number of industries, including automakers, builders and others, and its Norwegian smelters mostly worked by hand.
"Hydro still does not have a complete idea of the timing of the resumption of normal operation, and there are no accurate estimates of all financial and operational implications," the company said.
But Hydro says its technical team, working with external support, has discovered the root cause of the problems and is currently working to restart the company's IT systems.
The Norwegian National Security Administration (NNSA), a government agency dedicated to cybersecurity, said the attack used a virus known as LockerGoga, a relatively new type of so-called ransomware that encrypts computer files and requires a fee to unblock them.
