EDF will stop until the end of the year the operation of two nuclear reactors in France

French state-owned power generating company Electricite de France (EDF) plans to close two of the oldest reactor at the nuclear Fessenheim in 2020. The announcement was published a press-service of the company.

"EDF has applied for the approval of the regulator and the relevant Minister of France, on the operation termination and final connection of both reactors at a nuclear power plant in Fessenheim", - stated in the message.

Bring the reactors operation is planned for 22 February and 30 June this year.

Therefore, EDF has responded to the plans of the French government to close 14 nuclear reactors by 2035.

EDF also justifies its proposal to turn off the reactors in pairs for economic reasons. "As in the case of their construction, dismantling of nuclear reactors in pairs provides economies of scale," - said the representative of energy company.

17 Aug 2015 France adopted a law on the transition to green energy. Later, on September 27 2019р the French government and EDF have signed an agreement on the compensation of the state loss for early closure of NPP Fessenheim. 18 January 2020 the Minister of environment of France, Francois de Rouge declared the government's intention to reduce the share of nuclear power from 75% to 50% by 2035.
