Crude steel production in the 63 countries tracked by worldsteel rose 0.2% year-on-year to 1.26 billion tonnes in January-August.

Nucor President and CEO Leon Topalian was elected Chairman of the Board of Worldsteel for a one-year term. Last year's chairman Jung Woo Choi becomes vice-chairman, as does Tata Steel CEO TV Narendran.

Meanwhile, Iranian steel company ARFA and India's Saarloha Advanced Materials Private Limited have been accepted as permanent members. ResponsibleSteel, represented by Annie Heaton, became an affiliate member.

In addition, representative director and president of Nippon Steel Corporation Eiji Hashimoto, chairman of China Baowu Steel Group Corporation Hu Wanming, executive vice president of Gerdau SA were appointed to the committee Andr Beer Gerdau Johannpeter and President and CEO of JFE Steel Corporation Yoshihisa Kitano.

Alexey Mordashov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Severstal (PAO) (passive member), and Paolo Rocca, President and CEO of Techint Group , Leon Topalian, President and CEO of Nucor Corporation, Yu Yong, Chairman of HBIS Group Co, member Hubert Zajczek of the Board of Directors, CEO of the steel division of voestalpine AG were appointed to the executive committee of worldsteel.

Edwin Basson, CEO of the World Steel Association (worldsteel), has been appointed Secretary.

Worldsteel acts as the focal point for the steel industry, providing global leadership on all major strategic issues affecting the industry, with a focus on economic, environmental and social sustainability.

Its members represent approximately 85 percent of the world's steel production, including more than 160 steel producers, national and regional steel industry associations and steel research institutes. Crude steel production in the 63 countries tracked by worldsteel rose 0.2% year-on-year to 1.26 billion tonnes in the January-August period.

Founded in 1967, it is one of the industry's largest representative offices in the world with headquarters in Brussels.
