Exports of semi-finished products from China increased by 75% in May

In May, exports of semi-finished steel products from China amounted to 1.3723 million tons, which is 74.93% more than in the previous month and 344.71% more than in May last year.

This is reported by SteelOrbis with reference to data from the Customs Service of the People's Republic of China.

Chinese billet exporters were particularly active in March and early April, when most of the deals for May shipments were completed.

In addition, given the further decline in prices since early April caused by the escalation of the trade war, exports of blanks from China are likely to remain high in June. At the same time, slab exports grew at a slower pace.

In January–May 2025, China exported 4.7165 million tons of semi—finished steel products, an increase of 305.8% year-on-year.

As for imports, the trend remains negative. In January–May, imports of semi-finished products to China amounted to 361,100 tons, which is 67.43% less than in the same period last year.

In May alone, imports totaled 30,900 tons, which is 46.86% less than in April and 69.38% less than in May 2024.
