India has bought a record amount of coal from Russia

Last month, India increased its purchases of coal from the Russian Federation to a two-year high. This is reported by Kommersant.

Supplies of Russian thermal coal to the Asian country increased to 1.3 million tons in May, which is 52% more than in April. Since June 2023, the volume of monthly shipments has not exceeded one million tons.

Analysts explain this dynamic by the fact that Russian coal miners are ready to pursue a flexible pricing policy. In addition, fuel quality plays an important role.

According to experts, in a favorable market environment, New Delhi has reduced imports of low-calorie Indonesian coal, preferring Russian coal with a higher level of heat generation. At the same time, Indonesia remained the main supplier of coal to the country, increasing supplies by 16% in May.

The prospects for further demand for coal from India will depend on prices and climatic conditions, but Russians are rather cautious about the prospects. Analysts believe that Moscow is unlikely to be able to significantly increase the share of supplies to India, because production is growing in the country, and reserves in ports remain at a fairly high level.
