The price of steel products estimated by the European Steel Comment department remained stable, at low levels, in August, rebar and wire rod, sitting at four-year lows. But since there was low demand in Europe and the United Kingdom during the summer holidays, Carruthers-Green stressed that there was no shortage of topics for discussion.

"In April, British Steel was on the verge of closing," he said. "More recently, we have heard news about Liberty Steel UK (Special Steels division) going into administration.

"We had some bad news, and some incomprehensible news, as well, with the changes in the UK guarantees that were announced just 12 hours before they came into force. So, I hope that such an event will give you the opportunity to hear some more positive news."

At last year's UK Metals Expo, Tata Steel UK announced a £500 million public investment that will support low-emission EDP production at its facilities in Port Talbot, South Wales.

The MEPS podcast team, "Talking about Steel," interviewed the steel company's chief executive, Rajesh Nair, shortly after the announcement.
