The Mexican Chamber of Mines (Camimex) announced that total investment in environmental programs by its affiliates will amount to $ 177.2 million in 2019, up nearly 17 percent from the $ 151.5 million invested in 2018.
According to Camimex, most of the programs focused on protecting natural resources and biodiversity in several Canadian regions, managing water and reforestation, renewable energy and capacity building.
The Chamber also said that last year 111 companies took part in the green industry development program promoted by the Federal Attorney for the Environment, and five of them were awarded a certificate of quality, which means that they not only comply with all environmental regulations but also reduce them during production.
“Mexico's mining sector is a very well-regulated economic activity in our country and companies associated with Camimex comply with over 1,275 laws, regulations, rules and international treaties that Mexico has joined. In addition, they meet all the requirements and conditions that are set by the federal environmental protection agency, ”the statement says. “Our affiliates will continue to invest in improving their environmental and social programs to support Mexico's sustainable development goals.”
