Wayve attracts automakers with an artificial intelligence system for driving a car that learns like a human.

Wayve is attracting significant interest from investors and industry representatives, as developers of autonomous driving systems are gaining momentum again after years of unjustified expectations, according to Reuters. This London-based startup has raised $2.8 billion from investors and partners, including Nvidia, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan, and in June announced plans to implement its system in the Stellantis robotax in the Uber ride-hailing service network.

Wayve uses end-to-end machine learning, an artificial intelligence-based approach that transforms sensor data directly into control solutions rather than relying primarily on pre-programmed rules and highly detailed maps. This brings her model closer to Tesla's AI strategy, although Wayve's technology is designed to work with a wide range of sensors and chips, making it more tailored to the needs of various automakers. CEO Alex Kendall notes that the goal is to provide full autonomous control for any vehicle, brand, and market. This approach can accelerate adoption, as Wayve does not need to map roads in detail before entering the market of new cities and claims to have conducted tests in hundreds of locations around the world. However, the "black-hat" nature of the system raises questions about security and validation. Nissan, which plans to use Wayve technology in Japan by fiscal year 2028, calls it extremely advanced but difficult to interpret. Waymo and security experts say that integrated artificial intelligence alone may not be enough to ensure safe autonomous driving on a large scale.
