US Steel focuses on the production of nanosteel for high-strength alloys

US Steel, a Pittsburgh-based steel company, one of Northwest Indiana's largest employers, has acquired patents and flat-rolled products from NanoSteel to expand its offerings of high-strength steels, which have become more popular with automakers and other customers in recent years. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

NanoSteel has designed and developed proprietary alloys that have exceptional mechanical properties due to their nano-sized microstructure, which creates a unique combination of extreme strength with improved formability typically found only in low-strength, low-carbon steels. NanoSteel grades can be rolled thinner than other high strength grades and are intended for the automotive and heavy industry where higher strength-to-weight ratios are required.

US Steel acquired most of NanoSteel's intellectual property and became the sole owner and manufacturer of globally recognized high-strength steel grades.
